What shoes should I wear for the Wae Rebo trek?

Wear sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners with excellent grip.

The hike from Denge gains 750 meters in elevation over a steep, dirt path. Rain makes the trail slippery. Bring a reusable water bottle, high-energy snacks, and a waterproof poncho.

Pack warm layers for the evening and modest clothing for the village.

Temperatures drop significantly after dark at 1,200 meters. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, long pants, and thick socks for sleeping. You will sleep in comfortable clothes on a woven mat.

What gear do I need for sleeping and electronics?

Bring a power bank, a headlamp, and earplugs.

The village generator only runs from roughly 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Charging outlets are very limited. A headlamp helps you navigate the village at night. You will share a circular room with many other hikers, so earplugs are essential.

How much cash should I bring to Wae Rebo?

Bring enough cash in small denominations to cover fees, meals, and souvenirs.

There are no ATMs after leaving Labuan Bajo or Ruteng. You need IDR 50,000 for the mandatory Wae Lu'u welcome ritual. An overnight stay costs IDR 325,000 to 350,000 per person. You might also want extra cash to buy locally grown coffee beans from the villagers.
